An Indian national was fatally stabbed in Rockland, a town near Canada's capital, Ottawa, the High Commission of India confirmed on Friday. The identity of the victim has not yet been made public. In a post on social media platform X, the Indian High Commission stated, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in Rockland near Ottawa due to a stabbing. Police have stated a suspect has been taken into custody."
Suspect detained, investigation underway
Local media outlet CTV News reported that Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a violent incident near Lalonde Street in Rockland shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday. The area is approximately 40 kilometers east of downtown Ottawa.
While authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody, they have not yet disclosed the charges. OPP assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. "As we are just in the early stages of the investigation, there is no further information that can be provided," an OPP spokesperson told CTV News.
Indian mission assures support to family
The Indian mission also stated that it is coordinating with local community associations to extend assistance to the victim’s family. "We are in close contact through a local community association to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved kin," the post added.
The stabbing has sparked concern among the Indian diaspora in the region, and further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
